Representatives from departments and bureaus of education and training on March 14 held a press brief in Hanoi on the high-profile issue of poor quality reference books.

The Ministry of Education and Training said it will take harsh steps to clean up the educational books market. Representatives from the ministry said that parents and students should raise awareness of selecting good quality reference books.

In case they discover any poor quality books in the market they should report it via public media so that people can be alerted on fake educational material.

Nguyen Cong Hinh, head of the Ministry’s Permanent Education Department, said the Ministry will issue sanctions on schools and teachers who force students to buy reference books for small personal profits.

Public concern has been raised on the management of reference books. In 2008, the ministry issued a regulation on use of text and reference books for learning and teaching, a practice still followed but with bogus publications hitting the market.

The ministry stressed that to prevent poor quality reference books from being used in schools, the publishing houses must be held responsible. In addition, parents and students should have certain knowledge of quality.

The Department of Publishing and Information and Communications will be held accountable for publishing books and the educational sector will control books used by schools.
