After stealing three laptops within one hour, two thieves were chased, and one of them then stabbed two police officers and shot at another before climbing down into a sewer to hide in Ho Chi Minh City.

It was very fortunate, however, that the bullet was somehow stuck in the gun. The police finally seized the man after arresting his accomplice in Tang Nhon Phu A, District 9 yesterday morning.

The detainees in the serious case are Nguyen Van Tinh, 20 and Dang Nhu Y, 19, both from the central province of Quang Ngai.

According to the initial investigation results, Tinh carried Y on a scooter to Le Van Viet Street at 8 am Wednesday to search for prey and within 30 minutes they threatened two victims with a knife and stole two laptops from them.

The robbers than ran to La Xuan Oai Street and snatched a bag containing a laptop from a man, Nguyen Doan Quy. The victim shouted for help and drove after the thieves, but one of them kicked Quy off his motorbike when he caught up with them.

The robbers then sped away while locals took Quy to hospital and called police. A district police patrol team detected the robbers and then chased after them.

When the police got close to the robbers’ vehicle, Y, who was in the back, used a knife to slash Captain Dao Khanh Nam on the shoulder. Nam’s colleague immediately fired several shots into the air as a warning but the robbers continued trying to escape.

The police team continued their chase and later caught up with the robbers and then kicked at their motorbike, causing it to fall to the roadway. Tinh was seized while Y struggled with a police officer and then managed to snatch a gun from the officer, aimed the gun at his belly, and pulled the trigger.

Luckily, the bullet did not fire, but Y managed to escape after stabbing another officer, captain Dang Thanh Tam, deputy head of the Tang Nhon Phu A Ward police. He then crept into a sewer nearby to hide.

Police then searched the sewer but they could not find the robber. At 2 pm, another team spotted Ty walking on a street nearby and arrested him.

The police seized from the robbers two knives, along with three bags containing three laptops.

Trinh Van Sam, head of the social crime investigation police department of District 9, said Tinh and Y would be indicted for charges of robbery and murder.
