A Cultural Camp and Festival of Xoan and Phu Tho folk singing officially opened in the northern midland province of Phu Tho on April 4, as part of activities to celebrate the Hung Kings Temple Festival.

Xoan singing is a folk cultural product of Phú Thọ province. It is a traditional style of ritual folk singing performed in spring festivals. It is attached to a particular method that people once used to worship the Hung kings, the legendary founders of the Vietnamese nation.

Present were three Finnish Doctors of Music and members of 28 Xoan singing groups from districts across the province.

The festival aims to popularise Xoan singing, which has recently earned UNESCO’s recognition as the World Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is also a good opportunity for the province to preserve and develop Xoan singing as a popular art in the country.

Phu Tho province currently has about 13 Xoan singing clubs, it has published more than 4,000 CD and 3,000 books.
