The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) held a ceremony in Hanoi on October 25 to honour students who won prizes at regional and international Olympiads in 2012.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan praised the achievements of teachers and students at Olympiads held this year and affirmed that these accolades are attributed to the education sector’s active renovation as well as the efforts from localities.

He added that when Professor Ngo Bao Chau won the Fields Award, the world was made aware of Vietnam’s improved academic capacities.. Various medals that students accrued at the Olympiads also contributed to raising the  the nation’s prestige on the world intellectual map.

Nhan urged the MoET to devise specific plans to develop talents and encourage more students to make similar contributions to the nation.

Vietnam sent 34 students to attend regional and international Olympiads this year, as well as  the International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel-ISEF). They brought home 31 medals, including 5 golds, 15 silvers and 11 bronzes.

It is also the first time for three first prizes to be awarded to students participating at the Intel –ISEF.


Nhan conferred the Prime Minister’s Certificates of Merit to the five students who bagged gold medals at the Olympiads and another three to those who won first prizes at the Intel-ISEF.

The awardees include Le Huy Quang (Gold Medal at the Asia-Pacific Physics Olympiad); Dinh Ngoc Hai and Ngo Phi Long (International Physics Olympiad); Dau Hai Dang (International Mathematics Olympiad); Pham Dang Huy (International Chemist Olympiad); and Tran Bach Trung, Vu Anh Vinh and Bui Thi Quynh Trang (Intel-ISEF).

The MoET also presented its certificates of merit to several teachers who contributed to training these students.
