Swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc has brought home a gold medal from the ongoing 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in the Republic of Korea (RoK).

He finished first in the men’s 100m freestyle event on July 3, clocking 48.98 seconds.

Earlier Phuoc won a silver in the men’s 200m freestyle and a bronze in the 100m butterfly events.

His teammate Duy Khoi was placed fifth in the men’s 100m individual medley (clocking 56.32 seconds).

In the women’s 100m individual medley Nguyen Thi Anh Vien came fourth ahead of her teammate Kim Tuyen.

Vien also competed in the women’s 100m freestyle, but was placed seventh among eight competitors.

In the women’s standard chess team event, Vietnam defeated Malaysia in the first round, but was beaten by Taiwan in the next event.

In the 1/16 stage of the men’s U71kg kickboxing event martial artist Tran Thanh Y thrashed his rival Visal Kumar 3-0 while in the U63.5kg event Phan Van Yen was beaten by Iraq’s Hassan Majeed 0-3.

Y is scheduled to face Fahad Aabatan from Kuwait in the quarter-finals on July 4.

In the men’s three-cushion carom’s quarter-finals, player Ma Xuan Cuong outperformed host player Cho Jaeho to meet Japan’s Umeda Ryuj, while Nguyen Quoc Nguyen also defeated Lebanese Gholam Antoine to play Takeshima, another Japanese player, in the semi-finals.

By July 3, the Vietnamese team was placed 5th in the medal tally with three golds, five silvers and four bronzes, after China, the RoK, Thailand and Kazakhstan.
