VietNamNet BridgeThe special training programmes for talented students at HCM City universities do not seem to be achieving their goals. Many many graduates are even unable to find jobs because they do not meet employers’ requirements.

Training programmes for talented students at HCM City universities have paid too much attention to theory and not enough exposure to reality. This means they can not satisfy employers’ requirements.

“Students of the talents training programme at the HCM City University of Technology (HCMUT), who have interned at our company in the few past years, have not shown outstanding ability,” Phan Chi Dung, director of the city-based Technology Joint Stock Company (Petech), said.

He said outdated teaching methods, an emphasis on theory, and lack of practical exposure left many of the graduates without creativity or passion for knowledge.

Nguyen Linh, a physics graduate from the talented students training programme at the HCM City University of Natural Sciences (HCMUNS), posted his information on websites to find a job as a tutor.

“Few students who graduated with me can find a job matching their education,” Linh, who now works as a supervisor at Tan Son Nhat airport, said.

“Most have jobs in unrelated areas like business administration and commerce.”

He said the talented students training programme paid too much attention to theory, meaning that students got little exposure and were unable to satisfy employers’ requirements.

Le Trung, an IT engineer from HCMUT, said, “The training programme is very heavy and spread too thin. I am taught many things, such as programming, networking, and artificial intelligence, but nothing in depth.”

But compared to natural sciences and technology students, talented graduates in social sciences find it even more difficult. “I have to get 100 credits more than normal students and so have no time to learn English,” Phuong Ha, a talented history student, said.

“But because competence in English is a requirement everywhere, I cannot find a job.”

Dr Nguyen Kim Quang, head of the Training Department at HCMUNS, said many good students are not willing to join the talents training programme because of the hard work involved.

Dung said the talented students training programme should only be held at the postgraduate level and in some select streams.
