Milk distributors in the capital city should have their products tested regularly, the Health Ministry said Sunday.

During a visit to the city’s Big C Thang Long supermarket, Health Minister Nguyen Quoc Trieu asked the managers to carry out tests during different periods on each product.

Alain Noguera, director of the supermarket, said all members of Big C chain had started testing the quality and origins of the milk products right after the melamine scandal broke out.

So far no milk product from the chain has been found with melamine, he said.

The director also promised the Hanoi Department of Health that the supermarket will only sell milk products that were tested regularly and had clear certificates of origin.

Also Sunday, managers of Co.opMart supermarkets announced that they had stopped selling Hanoimilk (Hanoi Milk Joint Stock Company) products after tests by the

National Institute of Nutrition showed two of the company’s products were tainted with melamine.

Nguyen Cong Khan, head of the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Hygiene Management Office, told Thanh Nien on the same day that only around 30 percent of the milk product samples nationwide have been tested for melamine.

More milk samples should be tested for the sake of the children, most of whom depend on baby formula to supplement breast milk, he said.
