Doctors in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre are treating two babies who suffered shock after being given three different vaccines on Monday, the director of a local hospital said.

The babies, two and half months and three months old respectively, were hospitalized after being injected with the DPT vaccine – a combination of vaccines against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus, the Hepatitis B vaccine, and an oral polio vaccine (OPV), said Ho Trung Tuyen of the Ben Tre Center of Preventive Health.

They received inoculation during the provinc’s vaccination campaign together with about 80 other kids who didn’t show any abnormal reactions, Tuyen added.

The vaccines with expiry dates of between October this year and September, 2012 were provided by the national vaccination program, he said, adding that all preservation and inoculation was conducted in accordance with regulations.

The center is investigating the cases to report to the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute and the Ministry of Health, according to Tuyen.

Meanwhile, Hoang Viet, director of Nguyen Dinh Chieu General Hospital, said the babies were breathing with machine support, and one of them still remained in critical condition.

The condition of the other baby was stable, but it still had high fever, he added.
