A 15-year-old girl with bird flu symptoms died early this week in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue city, VnExpress reported Friday.

The girl, whose identity wasn’t revealed, died more than two hours after she was taken to Hue Central Hospital Monday, according to the news website.

Earlier  the same day, she had been admitted to the hospital of the Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy with symptoms of fever, respiratory failure, and pneumonia.

Doctors there transferred her to the central hospital as her condition worsened.

Nguyen Dung, director of the provincial Department of Health, was quoted by VnExpress as saying her blood sample was being tested and the result was expected in three days.

Meanwhile, 27 doctors and health workers of the college’s hospital who came in contact with the girl, as well as four patients who stayed in the same room with her, have been isolated.

They have been prescribed the anti-viral drug Tamilfu for ten days to prevent the spread of the avian influenza virus A/H5N1.

Similar precautionary measures have been taken for the girl’s family members, and the health department has sent its staff to Nam Dong District, where she came from, to sterilize the area.

Vietnam recorded seven human cases of the H5N1 virus last year, including two deaths in the southern provinces of Binh Duong and Tien Giang.
