Vietnam successfully performed its first human heart transplant, without foreign assistance, in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue city on Wednesday (March 2).

The five-hour surgery was conducted by Bui Duc Phu, director of Hue Central Hospital, with assistance from nearly 100 hospital staff.

The patient, 26-year-old Tran Mau Duc, received the heart from a brain dead donor. He regained consciousness seven hours after the transplant.

Last June, the Hanoi-based Vietnam Military Medical University successfully conducted the first human heart transplant with support from the Taiwanese-owned Cheng Hsin Hospital. Since August 2005, the hospital had performed numerous trials on pigs.

The world’s first human heart transplant was performed in 1967.
