Vietnam and the US have agreed to lift restrictions on air cargo routes between the two countries, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Tuesday.

“This new agreement represents a major expansion in trade opportunities in Southeast Asia,” Peters said in a press release.

The two countries reached an agreement in October 2003 allowing for an unlimited number of all-cargo carriers to operate between the two countries, with no limit on the number of flights.

The agreement reached Tuesday removes restrictions on routing and carrying cargo to or from third countries, Peters said.

It allows US airlines to carry cargo between Vietnam and third countries without requiring a stop in the US, she added.

The two sides also agreed to meet no later than October 2010 to work for further liberalization of the agreement, including additional rights for passenger services.
