The robot scans a man's face to analyze his emotions

An academic in Ho Chi Minh City says he has made the first robot in Vietnam that can recognize human emotions.

The robot operates automatically, using its camera to record a person’s facial expressions.

It then analyzes them on a screen to conclude if the person is happy, sad, surprised or angry, said  Nguyen Duc Thanh, a doctoral lecturer at the Electronics Faculty of HCMC University of Polytechnics.

When the person is sad, the robot would "walk" and make consoling actions, Thanh was cited by VnExpress as saying Friday.

Otherwise, it will move away from the person, he said.

The scientist said the recognition and analysis performed by the robot is more than 90 percent accurate.

“In the coming time, we will improve the product by increasing the types of emotions it can recognize, raise its accuracy, make the robot stand more firmly and make its actions more attractive.”

Le Hoai Quoc, deputy director of HCMC Department of Science and Technology, said the invention was a new one that can be of significant value to security and airline industries.

If invested in further, the robot can be helpful in many sectors, Quoc said.
