An elephant was found brutally killed in the central highlands resort town of Da Lat Sunday.

The 38-year-old male elephant was found tied to a tree, and the tendons of its hind legs were slashed. Its tusks and tail hair, meanwhile, were still in place.

According to initial information, the elephant belonging to Tuyen Lam Lake Tourism Complex went missing Saturday night when it was left to graze on a hillside. The elephant’s caretaker was absent from work that day.

It was found a few kilometers from where it was left on the hill.

Phan Thi Hoa, director of Nam Qua Tourism Site, which operates within Tuyen Lam, was quoted in Tuoi Tre, saying that the animal was savagely attacked two times last year too.

The elephant was hired from Dak Lak province seven years ago, Hoa added.

Currently forest rangers and police of Da Lat are investigating the crime scene.
