Vietnam ranked fifth among 10 nations worldwide most at risk from information insecurity in 2010, according to the Vietnam Information Security Association (Visa).

Over 30% of Vietnamese businesses reported network security problems, while around 30% admitted they didn’t feel safe with their current network systems.

Visa also said, at the national seminar on information security in Hanoi last week, that 20% of businesses couldn’t identify a motivation behind the cyber attacks.

Nguyen Viet The, head of the IT Department under the Ministry of Public Security, said information insecurity increased last year. The said the .vn domain is third-highest for vulnerability to hacker attacks, while nearly 60 million computers were attacked by viruses last year.

Last year an online newspaper suffered DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks several times.

Meanwhile, many websites of organizations and businesses have admitted serious shortcomings in information protection.

The pointed out that poor management was the root cause of most problems. Most websites appear to ignore warnings from national information security agencies, while many people still use unauthorized software.

As of February this year, Vietnam had 27 million Internet users, or 32% of the population. There were nearly 192,000 websites using the .vn domain and many businesses had adopted an online payment system into their business.
