The number of trauma cases caused by road accidents admitted to a major hospital in Hanoi in the last three days saw an increase of 50-60 percent compared to previous days.

The Viet Duc Hospital received an average 135 cases a day in three days between April 29 and May 1.

Hospital officals said 120 of those cases suffered from brain injuries, 40 of which are drivers who did not wear helmets.

Representatives from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City said the hospital received 273 trauma cases caused by road accidents over the last three days of the holiday.

Eighty nine of the cases suffered from brain injuries, four of them had died on the way to hospital.

This year, the Reunification Day (April 30) and Labor Day fell on the weekend, leaving HCMC more crowded as people from neighboring provinces flocked to the city during the holidays.

Most of the injured people come from Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc and Lam Dong provinces.

Doctors of the Cho Ray Hospital said many of the trauma cases are drunken drivers.

According to the Health Ministry, 2,568 people died and 2,750 were injured in traffic accidents in the first quarter this year.
