33-year-old tin mine worker Lu Van Toi is being treated at the Northwestern Nghe An Hospital for severe injures on his back, buttock, and legs. Toi was allegedly tortured for three hours by an illegal tin-mine operator and his accomplices.

Police in the central province of Nghe An said Sunday they have arrested six men on suspicion of badly beating up a tin-mine worker last Tuesday.

According to the police, Tran Dinh Truc, 37, who is in charge of an illegal tin-mining operation in Tan Ky District’s Tan Hop Commune, and five accomplices beat up 33-year-old Lu Van Toi until the worker fainted.

They suspected Truc of stealing some tin, the police said.

Toi told the police Truc beat him with a thorny stick while ordering his accomplices to drop burnt nylon bags on his back and pour salt and fish sauce on his wounds.

Toi said he had been tortured for three hours though he begged Truc to stop many times, insisting that he didn’t steal anything.

After Toi fainted, Truc’s accomplices took him to the Giai Xuan Commune Health Station where health staff rushed him to the Northwestern Nghe An Hospital for emergency treatment after providing first aid.

Doctors at the hospital said Toi was in a "multi-trauma" condition with severe injuries on his back, buttocks and legs.
