The military-owned telecom giant Viettel will cooperate with 28 coastal provinces and cities to survey locations for establishing tsunami warning systems this week.

The surveys are scheduled for three days starting Monday from the northern province of Quang Ninh to the southernmost province of Ca Mau.

Surveyed locations will be those that are less than one kilometer from the seaside, in densely populated areas, and coastal tourism sites with factories, industrial zones or nationally significant works.

Viettel has previously established ten tsunami-warning locations in the central city of Da Nang and successfully tested them last Sunday, according to the Central Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Prevention.

According to Vietnamese agencies, it will take two hours for tsunamis generated by a strong earthquake off the coast of the Philippines to reach Vietnam’s central coastline.

Coastal areas are all at risk of being hit by tsunamis with waves several meters high, especially the ones between the central provinces of Quang Binh and Binh Thuan.
