Eighteen people were killed and 14 others are still missing as tropical storm Haima hit central and northern provinces, the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention said Saturday.

The typhoon left 60 people injured, according to the committee.

The northern city of Hai Phong had the mosts deaths, with seven, followed by Nam Dinh Province and the central province of Thanh Hoa, with four deaths each.

Thai Binh, Yen Bai and Nghe An provinces reported one death each.

Most of the dead victims were struck by lightning while doing farmwork on the fields.

Of the 14 missing people, three were swept away by flood waters in the mountainous province of Yen Bai.

The 11 others are fishermen on two fishing boats that went missing in Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces.

The typhoon also inundated thousands of hectares of paddy fields and disrupted traffic with flooding.
