Tran Thuy Lieu confesses to setting her husband, Le Hoang Hung, on fire while he was sleeping at home in Long An Province’s Tan An Town on January 19.

Police have extended the detainment of a 40-year-old woman who allegedly set her husband on fire in January and turned herself in a month later.

Tran Thuy Lieu will remain in custody for four more months while investigations continue in the mariticide case. Earlier, Lieu admitted she set her husband, 50-year-old journalist Le Hoang Hung, on fire at their home in Long An Province’s Tan An Town on January 19, provincial police said.

Accused persons can be detained for four months for criminal investigations, and the detainment can be extended to a maximum of 16 months.

Police said Lieu’s confessions conflict with evidence found at the crime scene, and they suspect the involvement of an accomplice in the crime.

Lieu has told the police she bought rope from a local store and tied it to the balcony at her house to stage a home invasion, but the shop’s owner said she sold rope only to a man on the day of the crime.

Lieu also confessed to writing letters to Nguyen Van Tam, a local market watchdog official, to inform him of the investigation but the official denied having received any letters.

Tam was dismissed from his position earlier this month after investigators discovered he had an extramarital affair with Lieu and the duo were patrons at Cambodian casinos.
