Typhoon Kai Tak, with winds of up to 75 kph, hit Quang Ninh Province’s Mong Cai Town last night. It uprooted trees, caused a power outage, and injured a man. It also killed a taxi driver and injured at least 5 others in Hanoi.

According to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center, the tropical storm landed at the town at 8 pm yesterday with gusts of 88-102 kph, causing some damage to local residents and coastal aquaculture.

The storm then weakened into a low pressure area over the country’s mountainous provinces and continued causing heavy rain in Quang Ninh and other provinces.

Before the storm landed, Mong Cai authorities had evacuated families in dangerous areas, including Hai Dong District’s Hai Son Commune to safety.

In Hanoi, a taxi driver from Mai Linh Company died when a huge tree was uprooted by powerful winds and fell onto his cab on Lo Duc Street in Hai Ba Trung District at 4 pm yesterday.

Rescuers took three hours to take his body out of the crushed vehicle. Meanwhile, at least five others were injured in the capital due to falling trees.

It also brought heavy rain and thunderstorms to many northern localities yesterday afternoon. Many areas in Hanoi and Hai Phong have been flooded.

The Ministry of Defense’s Department of Search and Rescue has sent amphibious vehicles to Quang Ninh to support efforts to cope with the storm.

The storm is fading but heavy rain will continue in many provinces in Northern Vietnam over this weekend, said Vo Anh Tuan, an official at the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center.

He called on concerned authorities to take measures to cope with flooding, landslides and rockslides that may occur in the region, especially in mountainous provinces.

Yesterday afternoon, nine fishing boats from Quang Ngai Province with 89 fishermen on board took shelter from the storm in China's Hainan Island. said Tran Em, deputy chairman of the People's Committee of the province's Duc Pho District.
