The Vietnamese national women’s football team came from behind to beat archrivals Thailand 2-1 on Friday and secured a spot to advance to the next round at the 2012 London Olympics Asian qualifiers.

Strikers Nguyen Thi Hoa and Thanh Huong scored the two goals from their counterattack traps in the second half of the game. Earlier, Vietnam’s center back Bui Thi Nhu headed an own goal just two minutes into the match.

It marked the third consecutive win of Vietnam in group A, after pounding Hong Kong 4-0 last Friday and 2-0 victory over Myanmar on Sunday.

With the result, Vietnam top group A with 9 points and will take on the hosts Taiwan tomorrow.

Thailand stand second on the table with 6 points after three games, and Taiwan at third with five points.

In the second round, Vietnam and the other team from group A will join Iran and Jordan from group C and Uzbekistan from fray B to fight in the second round.

The top winner of the second qualification round will join the third round with the top five teams of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games edition including Japan, China, South Korea, North Korea and Australia.

The six teams will play a one-round league format in the final qualification round from September 1-11, and top two teams in the final round of qualifiers will fly the Asian flag at the 2012 London Olympics.
