German coach Falko Goetz will sign a contract to coach Vietnam’s national men’s football team later this month, Vietnam Football Federation chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said last Tuesday.

Hy said VFF has sent a letter to Germany asking Goetz to come to Vietnam and sign the contract by the May 30. The contract will begin on June 1.

VFF vice chairman Nguyen Lan Trung said the German tactician has agreed to the major terms of the agreement, but both parties need to further discuss a few minor points.

VFF chose the 49-year-old coach because he has agreed to a severance pay of two months’ salary if VFF fires him any time before the end of the contract.

VFF had suggested the severance pay earlier, but Goetz had wanted 16 months’ salary instead.

Goetz’s contract with the VFF will be for two years with a monthly salary of US$25,000. The federation will pay $13,000 while the State will pay the rest.

VFF requires Goetz to help Vietnam’s under-23 team to win the 26th South East Asian Games in Indonesia this November.

Goetz agreed to this after initially saying he did not have the time to fulfill this condition.

Goetz will take over the reins on the first of June if the contract is signed. However, he will not be in charge of the team when it plays Vietnam’s first two 2014 World Cup qualifying matches against Macau on June 29 and July 3. The same will apply to the U23 team for the first two qualifying rounds for the 2012 London Olympics when they play Saudi Arabia on June 19 and 23.

For these matches, the national and U23 teams will be led by Vietnamese coaches Mai Duc Chung and Phan Thanh Hung respectively.
