Vietnam’s chess ace Le Quang Liem had to settle for second spot at the 46th Capablanca Chess Memorial in Havana Monday after losing to defending champ Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in the final round.

Liem was leading the tournament before the final round and would have won the championship if he had managed a draw with Ivanchuk.

However, Liem had a bit of a disadvantage in the final round, playing with black pieces.

According to the Live Chess Ratings website www.2700chess.com , Liem earned 19.8 points to push him up to his elo 2706.8 and jump 15 places to 34th in the world rankings .

However, Liem still stands in the 49th spot with elo 2687 in the World Chess Federation (FIDE)’s rankings which are updated every two months.
