A superb performance at the ongoing 46th Capablanca Chess Memorial in Havana has given Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem the super Grandmaster (GM) title.

Before the contest in Cuba, Liem was ranked 49th in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings with an elo of 2687, the lowest among the five leading chess players at the event. However, he is in the lead now with 4.5 points from seven games.

The performance has earned him 13.3 points and boosted his elo to 2700.3, pushing him up nine positions and making him super GM.

Liem is now one of four Asian players among the top 40 in FIDE rankings. India’s Viswanathan Anand (elo 2817) is the world’s top ranked player, while Chinese players Wang Hao (elo 2732) and Wang Yue (elo 2714) are in the 19th and 29th places respectively.
