The Vietnam Badminton Federation will hire a Danish coach for the national
young team, said the federation’s Secretary General, Le Thanh Sang.

Sang said that the estimated wages for the Danish coach –
Mr. Ron Daniels – is $2,000 per month. This is the great effort of the
badminton federation because its budget is very limited, Sang added.

Daniels worked for a short time for a badminton team of the
Vietnam Army and for the badminton team of the central city of Da Nang.

According to Sang, Daniels is a reputed coach from Europe. “It is all good with Daniels’ achievements and
professional diplomas. However we need some time to evaluate and make
comparison between him and other foreign coaches in Vietnam,” Sang said.

At present, the three largest cities in Vietnam – Da Nang,
Hanoi and HCM City
– hire foreign coaches for their badminton teams.

HCM
City pays $5,000 a month
for Indonesian coach Aseap Suharno, which is very famous in the world badminton
circles.

Sang said that coach Asep Suharno is the best choice for the
national badminton team but the badminton federation cannot afford his wages.

He said he may ask help from HCM City
to “borrow” the coach to train the national team in three months before the
Southeast Asian Games.

Sang said that the Vietnam Badminton Federation and some
provinces have to hire foreign coaches, because Vietnam does not have many coaches
that meet international standards.

“Vietnam
has only two badminton coaches who had the Asian second-level certificate and
both of them are in HCM
City – Nguyen The Huy and
Nguyen Anh Hoang. We have many badminton training centers but they can only
train young players,” Sang explained.

According to Sang, Vietnamese badminton coaches are weak at
foreign languages, so they cannot update their knowledge.

Vietnam
aims to win a bronze medal for men’s single category at the upcoming SEA Games.
The biggest hope is certainly Nguyen Tien Minh.
