Martial artist Van Ngoc Tu will compete at the Judo Grand Slam Moscow 2011 on Saturday May 28 in an effort to win a berth at the 2012 London Olympics.

The 24-year old Tu, ranked 45th in the world, won the women’s 48kg category bronze medal at the 2011 Asian Judo Championships in Abu Dhabi, the United Arabia Emirates, in April.

That achievement earned her 72 points in the International Judo Federation (IJF)’s rankings to raise her total to 160. Tu is now on top of Asia in her category, followed by a martial artist from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea who is 14 points adrift.

According to regulations, in addition to the 14 top martial artists of each category in IJF rankings, a certain number of athletes from each continent are awarded berths at the Olympics.

Eight of Asia’s best artists in each category will win a berth at the London Olympics.
