One of Dray Sap waterfalls’ three tiers.

Waterfalls in the Central Highlands are as enchanting as the legends that surround them.

Dray Sap waterfall is just one of many Central Highlands waterfalls whose origins are steeped in myth. The story goes that the beautiful H’Mi and her lover were attacked by a monster as they flirted with each other while sitting on a rock.

H’Mi disappeared and her lover was transformed into a large tree clinging to the rock. The site then became a waterfall, the sound of which is said to be the sound of the boy’s calls for his lover. The mist around the falls is said to be the tears of the two young sweethearts.

The name Dray Sap means “Smoke Waterfall” in the local Ede minority language. The crashing waterfall has indeed created a mist that has a smoky effect. Dray Sap is also called “Husband Waterfall” or “Thac Chong” in Vietnamese.

Nearby Dray Nur waterfall is also known as “Thac Cai” or “Wife Waterfall” in Vietnamese.

From the city of Buon Ma Thuot, one of Vietnam’s coffee capitals in Daklak Province, it takes about one hour to get to the waterfalls by car.

Seen from afar, the three-tier Dray Sap Waterfall is a striking picture against the mountains and forests. The water flows especially strong in the rainy season, when each of the falls are about 12 meters high and 120 meters wide. In the dry season, the landscape is just as vivid with the white water against a vast blue sky.

The best photo op comes at the suspension bridge facing the waterfall.

There are also many hiking trails through the surrounding forest that take travelers through dense foliage to small springs surrounded by a variety of singing birds.
