According to the legend, there was a temple of God of Sea in Nghi Duong district. Once there is a local person passing by and see a couple of buffalo fighting under the temple. Thus, he set up the festival of buffalo fighting annually to present the God.

Firstly, people in each village have to choose the buffalo since February in the famous markets in Hai Duong, Ha Dong, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh provinces. They have to come to the places where they would find the real and precious buffalo. Even they have to come to mountainous area in the West North. Buffalo is chosen since they are 4 or 5 years or above.

Secondly, the buffalo will be raised and trained by a skillful person in the village. Fighting buffalo is raised in the separate cage to rebuild their wild instinct to help them more violent in the fight. One of the special feature is the woman is not involved in any of these activities.

The buffalo in the villages are brought to fight in the first round before coming to the final in the main festival. At the main time (10th of eighth lunar month), people in other districts and provinces also come to Do Son to join the festival.

Location of fighting is the mutual house of Do Son. Flags and the fighting arena has been settled with the stadium for guests to attend.

Starting of the festival is the offering until midnoon. Followed is the procession of buffalo statue to the yard of 20,000 m2.

All the six buffalos which were chosen to fight are ready and led into the yard. Each couple of buffalo is led to fight three times to find the winner.

Five times of fighting will prolong until the evening. Then all the buffalos will be pecked and deliver to the local people.

The festival will be hold with some same games such as other festival in the country after three days.
