Lam Thanh Tran, who is called “Shen Nong” of Moc Chau plateau in the northern province of Son La, earns nearly VND100 million ($5,000) from dairy cows.

This man, 53, is living alone in a vast farm of nearly five hectares in Moc Chau plateau.

Tran, a real farmer, said that with over 50 dairy cows, which yield around 700,000 kilos of milk a day, he earns nearly VND100 million of profit a month.

Tran left his hometown, Nam Truc district, Ha Nam province in 1978, at the age of 20 to study animal husbandry at a vocational training school. He then joined the Moc Chau state farm as a technician.

Until 1990, he had his own dairy cows thanks to the Moc Chau farm’s new policy: loaning workers to buy cows and the loan was paid by milk.

“This was a great opportunity for people who had will-power to enrich themselves,” Tran said.

Tran experienced a lot of failures to reach today’s success. Now he has the highest number of dairy cows in Moc Chau. Locals call him the “King of dairy cows” while milk companies called him “Shen Nong”.

Tran’s dairy cow farm is nearly five hectares. The land is granted by the Moc Chau Dairy Company.

The farmer said he has to import grass from the US for his dairy cows, pricing VND7,000/kilo.

Tran gets up at 5 am to do the milking. He cleans up the cow cages at noon and feeds them. He is busy all the time with cows. He has imported milking machines to save time.

Tran has been awarded many certificates of merit of the local government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for his achievement in animal husbandry. His cow two years ago won the first prize at the famous Miss Cow pageant in Moc Chau.
