VietNamNet Bridge – Music awards are very important to the careers of singers so it is abnormal when singers refuse to receive awards.

Pop star Dan Truong recently withdrew from the Blue Wave Award and one of the major reasons was he was bored after winning the award for nearly ten consecutive years.

Hoang Tuan, Dan Truong’s manager, said the Blue Wave Award is selected by audiences so usually the award is presented to pop stars who have large numbers of young fans.

Before Dan Truong’s case, pop singer Dam Vinh Hung refused to receive the Platinum Star Award after taking it twice.

The New Diva Award 2005 was in the same situation when the winners didn’t want to receive it.

Singer Dam Vinh Hung said the music industry hasn’t made any changes to these awards. They are old and repetitive and singers aren’t proud when they receive them.

It’s time to change music awards: that’s comment of singers and experts. Awards that are based on the audience’s votes (via mobile messages, online votes, etc.) get a bad name for transparency so most singers don’t want to participate.

All music awards have the same “script”: choosing the winners through the audience’s votes and a jury and then awards are shared to ‘stars’.

Journalist Le Quang Thanh Tam, chief representative in HCM City of the Screen and Stage Newspaper, the organiser of Platinum Award, said: “A pop star refused to receive our award, perhaps because he was afraid to take it too many times. But if the audiences continue to vote for him, we have to present the award to him. If he refuses to take it, we have to announce this fact to the public and we can’t present it to another singer.”

He said one of the difficulties for organisers of music awards is the music market has been saturated. There are too many singers but there are not outstanding ones. “Renovation is our wish but we can add some new awards, we can’t completely replace the old with brand new ones,” he added.

Nguyen Van Tien, an official from the HCM City People’s Voice Radio, the organiser of the Blue Wave Award, said: “After ten years of the Blue Wave Award, some successful singers wanted to give up the playground for younger singers. That’s a good idea! We want to renew the programme but we are facing some difficulties. When we respect the audience’s votes for old faces, accidentally we don’t meet the requirement of seeking new faces for the award.”

Singer Dam Vinh Hung suggested organisers of music awards pay attention to the winners in the “post-award period” so that they can bring into full play their ability.
