opened yesterday in Hanoi on the occasion of upcoming 1000th Anniversary of the Thang Long – Hanoi Foundation.

The exhibition, jointly held by the National Library of Vietnam and the Embassy of France in Vietnam, is a part of a project titled “Recovery of Writing in Southeast Asia”.

54 ancient maps, dated between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries (1873 – 1965), in the exhibition help viewers learn about the changes in the geography of Hanoi and its surroundings.

The maps, drawn by both Vietnamese and French map-makers, are divided into three separate parts throughout history. The most ancient and beautiful map of Hanoi city was drawn in 1873 by Pham Dinh Bach, a map-maker of Hanoi’s Geography Department.

The exhibition is open until Friday (17 October).
