Boy members of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, one of the oldest European children choirs, is set to perform in Vietnam this week.

A renowned children choir from Austria will make their first performance in Ho Chi Minh City this weekend.

The program, starring the Vienna Boys’ Choir, will be held at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music on Saturday night after charming audiences in the Hanoi capital Wednesday.

The choir’s maestro, Cagnin Manolo, said the concert would feature both classical and modern music, including the performance of a Vietnamese folk song.

Maximilian I, the Holy Roman Emperor, originally founded the choir in 1498 by issuing a command for 12 boys to be summoned to the court and trained as singers.

The modern day choir has around 100 boys from 10 to 14 years of age, with a good ear for music and an excellent voice in the soprano or alto range.

The choir holds around 300 performances a year for some 500,000 audiences, mostly in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

As one of the oldest children choirs in Europe, the Vienna Boys’ Choir has worked with great composers such as Heinrich Isaac, Franz Schubert, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The choir’s performance is its first for an annual music program entitled “Vietnam Airlines Classic,” which aims to create opportunities for the airline’s frequent passengers and customers to enjoy European classical music.
