VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City will continue its civilization of municipality campaign in 2009 in pursuit of a greater advance in lifestyle for the city, said an official of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

There has not been much progress made in lifestyles in places where most of the residents are migrant workers. Bad language and littering frequently occur in such places.

Chairman of the HCM City People’s Council, Pham Phuong Thao, said open-air-markets have frustrated efforts of authorities in migrant-worker living areas such as Tan Tao A ward of Binh Tan district and Linh Trung ward of Thu Duc district.

The city has built another 39 public toilets, reaching the number of 85 in the city at present. However, a report of the campaign said the city needs twice as many, 180. Some districts, such as districts one and three, do not want to build more because they think they ruin the scenery.

There have been 3,539 public garbage cans installed in the city. The report said the city should allow the private sector to install garbage cans. In turn, they would be allowed place advertising banners on the cans.

The chief of the campaign has insisted on extending the campaign to the following years to create a solid, civilized lifestyle for the city.

“It would be a waste of effort if we carried out the campaign for a short time or discontinuous periods,” she added.
