Japanese community celebrates Bon Odori festival in town; “International Joyce” Exhibition opens in Da Nang; Japanese film festival hits Hanoi, Hai Phong

Young Japanese and Vietnamese people join the Bon odori dance at Japanese school in District 7 last week.

The Japanese community and Vietnamese friends celebrated Bon Odori festival, a traditional Japanese festival held in August, at the Japanese School in South Saigon in Phu My Hung Urban Town in District 7 late last week.

This was one of many festive activities, which included a picnic in the yard of the school, featuring traditional Japanese and Vietnamese cookings and games, drum and singing performances, a best yukata (traditional Japanese costume) contest and Bon odori dance.

Yoshiro Yasuda, senior advisor of Nhat Anh Trading Pt. Enterprise, chief of the Active Committee of the Bon Odori in Vietnam and the organizer of the event, told the Daily that he held this event to help Japanese children who live far away from their home country have a chance to understand more about their own culture, and to help Vietnamese people to understand more about his culture. He said that he taught the Bon Odori dance to about 25 Vietnamese students volunteers on his committee, and now they are teaching the dance back to the Japanese children.
