VietNamNet BridgeWe have a common wish: all for Hanoi – the capital city which was beautiful in the past, is beautiful at the present and will be more beautiful in the future.

That’s the wish of Ngo Quy Duc, the team leader and the founder of MyHanoi, a group of over 50 young people who are studying and working in the city, with the aim of launching and implementing different activities to research, develop and preserve the diversified cultural values of the capital city in order to help other people and youths in particular understand more about Hanoi.

Projects for Hanoi

MyHanoi’s first project was to establish an online library at www.myhanoi.com.vn to provide mostly Hanoi- related information.

Duc said the idea to establish the group came into his mind when he was studying in Hanoi-Aptech. At the time he found it very difficult to access information about Hanoi on the Internet.

“There might be many websites which provide information about Hanoi, but they were not updated, therefore, it was very difficult for me to find what I needed then. As a result, I wanted to design a website that could provide all Hanoi related information,” said Duc.

MyHanoi’s first project was to establish an online library at www.myhanoi.com.vn to provide mostly Hanoi- related information.

During the developing process, Duc and his members in MyHanoi have received support from many experts such as Hanoi scholar Nguyen Vinh Phuc, historian Duong Trung Quoc and teacher Do Kim Hoi.

The online library is now entering its second phase. According to Duc, the website is expected to operate smoothly as of October 10 and will be a gift of MyHanoi to the city to mark the 54th anniversary of its liberation day.

“The library will also be made in English and French to introduce Hanoi’s image to friends all over the world. However, due to the huge amount of work, we plan to complete it by 2010 when Hanoi will mark its 1,000th founding anniversary,” Duc added.

Apart from the website, the group also developed another project to encourage youths to improve cooking hygiene in stores, which was awarded at the 6th Vietnam Innovation Day co-organised by the World Bank and the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Newspaper in June.

The project has got off the ground since July. A number of nicely-decorated wastebaskets in different shapes made by MyHanoi’s members are being used at some food stores in the city.

Along with free wastebaskets, the group members have made a great effort to raise public awareness of food hygiene.

“As you know, old habits die hard. So we have no choice but to try our best to persuade people to keep public areas clean,” Duc noted.

Recently, MyHanoi has provided free wastebaskets to some schools in Hanoi to make students become more responsible for their behaviour and role as future masters of the country.

A young leader

Born in 1984 to a Hanoi family, Duc has a strong attachment to the capital city. He said that at first his parents did not support his plan to launch a website about Hanoi as they worried that it would affect their son’s studies. With his persuasion and initial good results from the group’s projects, his parents finally agreed with him and even let his sister join the group.

Love for Hanoi, determination and good computer skills have helped the young computer programmer overcome many difficulties that arose during the implementation of the projects.

According to the young leader, the greatest difficulty facing MyHanoi is a lack of human resources and finance. As the group is a voluntary one, there is a high staff turnover. Old people leave and new people arrive regularly. And the group’s budget mainly depends on its members’ generous contributions.

“Nonetheless, the happy smiles we see on the faces of people here and there have given us fresh impetus to overcome all difficulties,”

MyHanoi includes not only Hanoians, but also people from many other parts of the country and even some foreigners. Duc said, “No matter where you are from, your love for Hanoi is enough.”

Duc has spent much of his time completing the online library and promoting all the activities of the group. As a leader, he always tries to find new ways of getting more young people involved in MyHanoi’s projects.

“No matter how difficult it is for the group, I will never give up my plan,” Duc affirmed.
