British artist Simon Redington will present his latest works today in an exhibition entitled “What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?” at the Art Vietnam Gallery in Hanoi.

The artworks comprising woodcuts, poster-style prints, oil paintings and sculptures express Redington’s concerns about key issues of modern society, including war, peace, consumerism and social evils.

A set of poster-style prints titled “Bolt 117” – named after a type of “smart bomb” – highlights the danger of weapons replacing intelligence as the true measure of power.

The oil paintings with their bright colors and highly graphic compositions are almost garish in their dark humor.

The images engender a festive atmosphere, but also convey a menacing danger beneath the veneer.

The series concludes with two ghoulish-looking mannequins, emphasizing the artists’ ultimate message of “wake up before it is too late,” organizers said.

Redington has been working over the past 10 years in London, Hanoi and Paris as a printmaker, woodcarver, and painter.

The exhibition will run until November 17 at 7 Nguyen Khac Nhu Street in Ba Dinh District.
