VietNamNet BridgeA Vietnamese young writer was presented with the Southeast Asian Writers Award (SEAWrite award) at a ceremony in Bangkok on Sept. 30.

Her short-story collection “Canh dong bat tan”, the best seller in Vietnam in 2005, won the Vietnam Writers’ Association (VWA)’s award in 2006.

Nguyen Ngoc Tu, 32, was amongst nine regional writers receiving this year’s regional award, initiated by the Thai Royal in 1979 to honour annually outstanding poets and writers in Southeast Asian countries.

Tu became the first Vietnamese young writer to receive the well-known award, that previously came to 11 renowned aged writers and poets of the country, such as To Huu, Ma Van Khang, Huu Thinh, Nguyen Khai, Bang Viet and Do Chu.

Her short-story collection “Canh dong bat tan” (Boundless Green Field), the best seller in Vietnam in 2005, won the Vietnam Writers’ Association (VWA)’s award in 2006.

Born into a poor family in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, Tu earlier won some others awards, including the first prize from the Ho Chi Minh City Writers’ Association for her first work, “Ngon den khong tat” (The Ever-shining Lamp), in 2000, and another VWA award for “Giao thua” (The New Year’s Eve) in 2003.

In 2003, she was selected by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to be one of ten outstanding young persons.
