An artisan from Hue city Town, Nguyen Van Sinh, began work Thursday on a three-ton copper bell for the Duc Lam Pagoda in Japan’s Nagoya City.

Superior Buddhist monk Takaoka Shucho, head of Duc Lam Pagoda, ordered the bell, which cost VND900 million (US$53,000).

The Japanese monk, who is interested in Vietnamese culture, decided to order the bell when he visited the Hoa Binh Bell Tower on Ngu Phong Mountain in central Thua Thien-Hue Province’s Hue Town.

When he returned to Japan, he called for contributions from other Buddhists to raise money for the bell.
