VietNamNet BridgeAn exhibition of Vietnamese oil paintings opened its doors to the public in Ha Noi yesterday.

Faces of Eve: The New Era II by Dao Quoc Huy is among the fine oil-on-canvas paintings on display at the exhibition.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition, the show will present Viet Nam’s best oil paintings.

“In Viet Nam, together with other painting materials, such as lacquer and silk, oil-on-canvas is a part of modern fine arts. Although oil painting wasn’t introduced in the country until the beginning of the last century, the material was soon accepted by Vietnamese painters. The Oil-on-canvas Paintings Exhibition 2008 - the biggest of its kind - will give people a general view about the development of oil painting in Viet Nam in recent years,” said Culture, Sports and Tourism deputy minister Hoang Duc Toan.

According to a member of the exhibition’s organising board, Ngo Quang Duong, the show will also promote talented young painters. “The Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum will select some of the best paintings to purchase for the museum’s collection.” Duong said.

The exhibition will display 170 paintings, which have been selected from more than 1,000 paintings submitted by nearly 550 painters nationwide.

A panel featuring experts and painters will be held on November 14 to discuss the development of oil painting in Vietnamese fine arts and the role of young painters.

The exhibition will run through next Tuesday at the Viet Nam Culture and Arts Exhibition Centre, 2 Hoa Lu Street, Ha Noi.
