VietNamNet Bridge - On November 17th, the Prime Minister decided to select April 19 as the Cultural Day for Vietnam’s ethnic cultural day, an event which will be celebrated annually starting in 2009. The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh talked about this new cultural day.

Can you tell us why there is a necessity for the establishment of a special cultural day for Vietnam’s ethnic minorities?

54 ethnic groups live together in Vietnam, and have passed thousands of years with solidarity with the main Vietnamese people to create a united Vietnamese nation, and a culture imbued with a strong national identity. Passing revolutionary periods, ethnic cultural work has obtained great achievements, contributing greatly to the national revolutionary cause. In the national industrialization and modernization period, before the trend of international cultural exchange and integration, cultural ethnic work was paid much attention to.

Therefore, the 5th Resolution of the Party Central Committee at the 8th tenure on building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with a specific national identity, defined that culture is the spiritual foundation of the society, as well as the objective and motivation for socio-economic development.

Now, along with unfavourable changes in climate and weather, the demand of linking together economic development and integrating into the world, and the world financial crisis, hostile forces have taken advantage of the situation to arouse disorder in order to drive a wedge between the various peoples of Vietnam. This requires that the people of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam join forces to promote the national cultural identity and the strength of great national unity.

So, it is necessary to select a national ethnic cultural day to glorify the cultural values of all 54 brotherly groups. This shows the special care of the party and the state for the socio-economic and cultural development of ethnic minority people.

What is schedule for the organization of this day in the near future?

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will promulgate a framework for a schedule of activities to celebrate Vietnam’s Ethnic Cultural Day and outline an organization plan for 2009. The plan will be made public soon.

One of demands for organizing the event is that the activities must be from real expectations and must meet the demansd of local ethnic minority people. Is it right?

This is a prerequisite demand which must be made to ensure success, as well as a major milestone towards the significance of the event. To make the day close to local ethnic minority people, the framework must be designed from the grassroots levels, from villages to precincts, districts, towns, provinces and up to the Central government. Ethnic minority people will participate in making the plan, organizing and enjoying the event.

In addition, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will establish a consulate council to select activities to suit the political situation and the mission of the nation, contributing to implement policies on ethnic minority culture and encourage creative ideas.

Thank you very much!
