The Vietnam Kennel Club (VKC) will hold the first national dog show this month as the first step to being recognized by the World Canine Federation.

The competition, to be held at Ho Chi Minh City’s Dam Sen theme park in District 11 from December 27-29, will be judged by international jurors from the world federation, known as FCI or Federation Cynologique Internationale in French.

More than 100 dogs from 50 owners have already been entered into the contest, organizers said.

The club’s deputy head Nguyen Van Lang said the show was a pilot for an international event expected to be held next year.

“Next year’s dog show is one of the terms for Vietnam to become a member of the FCI,” Lang said.

Lang also said the club would keep petitioning for international recognition of the ridgeback dog breed from southern Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island.
