“AGourd-like shape” (Cái bầu) is a word that painter Thanh Nghi used to name a consistent painting motif for his art works. The motif is especially impressive for its immeasurable flexibilities, which are skillfully and confidently handled with the Painter’s oil-painting technique.

The gourd-like shape appears in some paintings as a woman’s back. In some other paintings, it looks like a papoose (back basket) or a vendor’s bamboo frame with a pair of baskets. Then in another picture, it might be a leg calf of a hard labor or a portrait of the author himself…

At the first sight, under this motif, the figures in his paintings look so rough and so stiff as “robot”. Everyone seems to come from a strange world which can only be in the children’s imaginative world or created only by scientists. All of these figures are in acting positions but their very “robot” postures make them look still like dolls…

He has proved a principle in plastic art that when an artist masters the profession, no mater how floating he is, he can still give a very good lay out of paintings. Vu Thanh Nghi even goes beyond the limitation of reality dependence and reality description in paintings (That is very irritating limitation of the Vietnamese paintings).

Therefore, he can freely present another view of the world. That is a real world of the every day life which is freely reflected in his paintings with not just aestheticism but also with worries of life.
