VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnamese contestant at Miss World 2008 pageant Duong Truong Thien Ly talked with VietNamNet through email.

What things are you not content with at the Miss World 2008 contest?

Comparing this pageant with the Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam, in which I was involved in organising activities, I would say that this contest is organised less considerately than the event in Vietnam. For example, contestants are often informed of events of the next day at around 12am the night before. This tardiness causes difficulties for contestants in preparing their clothes.

Additionally, the Internet connection at the hotel where I am staying is not good so I can’t consistently send pictures and information to Vietnam.

How is your health?

Till now I’m still fine, though the schedule is full. Food is abundant and delicious but I don’t eat much because I have to control my weight. I hope that I can maintain my shape till the end. I can say I’m ready for the final night.

Are you facing any difficulties or feeling any pressure at present?

Before coming to South Africa, I spiritually prepared and I can accept the fact that I may return home without any prize so I feel at ease now. But it doesn’t mean that I came here and am participating in this event pessimistically and passively. This is a chance for me to introduce Vietnam to the world and establish social relations. And I’ve tried my best for that goal.

The three girls who top betting lists are Miss Russia, Miss Mexico and Miss Ukraine. What do you think about these contestants?

Competition is the nature of contests. I’ve learnt a lot of experience in behaviour and knowledge about other cultures. All contestants aspire to prove themselves and I think victory will belong to the ones who can bring into play their abilities timely and have some luck.

Your name is among the top 15 contestants on betting lists and among the top of the Miss People’s Choice ranking. What do you want to say to Vietnamese readers?

I still keep in contact with my family in Vietnam and I’m very happy to know that many Vietnamese people have been supporting me through online votes. I’m very moved by people’s support and I promise to exert more efforts to be worthy of their support.

In beauty contests, every contestant often tries to build up their own style. How about you?

The image of a Vietnamese, dynamic and friendly is my goal. I like natural things and at this contest I can reveal myself. The contest is underway so I can’t say much but at least I’ve partly shown myself through some activities, such as I was chosen to say thank you to local organisers on behalf of the Asian contestants, I was one of the five best golfers and more importantly, I’ve created a good impression of myself and Vietnam.

Will you parents be present at the final night to cheer you on?

My parents have been by my side since the contest began. Their presence at the final night will be a great source of encouragement for me. I want to stay in South Africa for several days more after the contest to go to some tourist sites with my parents.

What is your plan after this contest?

I will pursue my studies in the US because I’ve been off school for a term. Actually, participation in recent events is one way of extra learning, which is very important to schools in the US. However, I’ll try to return to Vietnam more often.

Thank you and good luck!
