Vietnamese hip-hop artists to perform overseas
Published: 02/12/2008 05:00
| VietNamNet Bridge – Three Vietnamese hip-hop dance troupes, Big Toe, Milky Way and Sacred Crew, will gather to tell a story entitled “Many-sided”, directed by French artist Sebastien Ramirez and German artist Raphael Hillebrand.
“Here I experience a new challenge, challenge of myself. “Many-sided” is completely different from “Vehicles” (2006). We dance to traditional music played by traditional musical instruments like dan tranh (16-chord zither), dan bau (monochord), T’rung and percussion. We not only have to dance, but show inner feelings and creativeness,” said Pham Khanh Linh, 20.
All members of “Many-sided” were carefully selected by Ramirez and Hillebrand, both 26, who have performed in Germany, France and the US.
Hip-hop dancers have practiced together for two weeks and their first shows will be held at the Youth Theatre, 11 Ngo Thi Nham, Hanoi on December 8-9, and on December 11 at 6 Mac Dinh Chi, HCM City before going to Jakarta, Indonesia.
The 50-minute “Many-sided” is a joint product of France, Germany and Vietnam.
“Vietnamese artists dance very well. We let them have an independent play. We want to share weal and woe with Vietnam’s hip-hop atmosphere because this is a multi-faceted project, which enables exchange through hip-hop,” said Raphael.
Dirk Korell, coordinator and producer of “Many-sided”, said after the performances in Jakarta, two Vietnamese hip-hop dancers, Ho Hai Long and Pham Dinh Hao, and the two French and German artists would stay there for four days to introduce hip-hop techniques to young Indonesians.
The show is co-sponsored by the French Cultural Centre, the Goethe Institute (Germany), Art Performance Organising Centre (Vietnam) and the Elysee Foundation.
Participating dancers include: Bui Minh Tri, Hoang Ky Anh, Lai Thi Sao Mai, Nguyen Viet Thanh, Pham Dinh Hao, Pham Khanh Linh (Big Toe), Ho Hai Long (Sacred Crew), Nguyen Duong Nhat, Vu Tung Phuong (Milky Way), Ha Dinh Huy (percussion), Hoang Thi Thanh Hoa (dan tranh, dan bau and T’rung).
