Lookatvietnam - Professor Tran Van Khe has immersed himself in the study of Vietnamese traditional music for more than fifty years and has expressed concern over how those intangible cultural heritages will be preserved during the current process of globalisation.

“Intangible cultural heritages are precious national assets. If we lose them, we cannot recover them,” Professor Khe told the Vietnam News Agency during a recent interview regarding the issue.

The researcher elaborated that intangible cultural heritages, as passed down from generation to generation, possess precious spiritual values that can be viewed as a witness who speaks vividly and truthfully regarding the unfolding of history.

These intangible cultural heritages need to be preserved, requiring the involvement of the entire nation and local administrations at all levels.

The professor pointed to the lack of personnel and specialists who are dedicated to this work, and the modification and commercialisation of many age-old intangible heritages, such as “hat chau van” (ritual ceremonial songs), severely restrict the effective preservation of such heritages.

“The biggest difficulty for us now is to discover intangible cultural heritages that remain true to their historical origins. However, we must do our best to ensure that those heritages that have been transformed are returned to their original forms,” Professor Khe said.

“What we need to do right now is to make recordings of living intangible heritages, not just the Central Highlands gongs, but also “hat xam” (beggar’s songs), “hat quan ho” (love duets), “hat cheo” (popular opera), “hat tuong” (classical opera) and the royal court music in a professional manner. Additionally, performances of these intangible heritages must also be recorded professionally and scientifically.”

Coupled to that is the important role played by artisans, the musical master emphasised.

“We shall create conditions to enable artisans to lead comfortable lives so that they can devote their hearts and minds to enthusiastically performing songs and music for us to record. We also shall talk to these artisans about the necessity of preserving intangible heritages, in order to pass them down to younger generations,” the musical master told VNA.

In addition, the professor referred to the role played by the administrations at all levels in facilitating this work.

He said “only the administrations are capable of launching a preservation movement, providing funding for the implementation of the work, and giving praise to artisans to ensure that they are eager to continuously undertake this preservation work.”

In the meantime, the preservation of intangible cultural heritages has been seriously undertaken by the Folk Culture Association, the Academy of Musicology, the Centre for Culture and Information and the Agency for Intangible Cultural Heritages.

There are researchers who have contributed greatly to conserving these intangible cultural heritages, including Bui Xuan Hien, Nguyen Xuan Dien, To Ngoc Thanh, and Dang Hoanh Loan.

“The value of intangible cultural heritages are priceless. They may have been left to gather dust but their inner quintessence, integrating the talent, creativity and ideologies of our elder generations remains intact. These priceless assets have been handed down from generation to generations and have withstood the test of time. If we leave these assets uncared for, we commit sins against our ancestors and history,” Professor Khe concluded
