Lookatvietnam - Participants at a seminar on the preservation of traditional cultural values in Duong Lam Ancient Village, which was held by the Institution for the Preservation of Relics on January 19th, discussed ways on how best to promote the historical and cultural values of the village, while at the same time contributing to its socio-economic development.

In Duong Lam Ancient Village, there are more than 100 ancient houses, as well as a system of temples and pagodas associated with the cultural activities of peasants in the Red River Delta in ancient times.

However, the system of tourism services which has spontaneously developed around the relics has brought negative effects to the tradtional cultural values of the ancient Vietnamese village.

At the seminar, most of scientists said that it is necessary to improve local people’s awareness of values of the relics, so that they will volunteer to participate in the preservation and promotion of their, and the village’s, heritage.

Also discussed at the conference was the need for concrete government regulations on the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values in Duong Lam Ancient Village, said Professor and Architect Hoang Dao Kinh.

The current system of tourism services needs to be moved out the relics area, said Dr. Kinh.

As currently scheduled, plans for a project for the preservation and promotion of the traditional cultural values of Duong Lam Ancient Village will be completed by the end of April this year.
