Report: Obama mulls closure of Guantanamo prison

U.S. President Barack Obama is mulling the closure of a prison in the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo, Cuba, where terrorist suspects are detained, said a TV report on Wednesday.

Citing two administration officials, the CNN report said that Obama’s government is drafting one or more executive orders for the closure of the Guantanamo prison as early as Thursday.

The orders, which will shut up the prison within one year, request a systematic review of detention policies and procedures and a study of all individual cases to decide on “whether and how such individuals can and should be prosecuted.”

The new policy is also expected to include an Army manual for interrogations on all those in the U.S. custody, said the officials.

Some other U.S. media reports also said that the newly-sworn government circulated on Wednesday a draft executive order on closing the prison in the Cuban bay, a move that “would further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice.”

The controversial facility has drawn a lot of criticism against former President George W. Bush’s government by human right activists and other governments since detainees were suspected of being tortured and deprived of legal rights.

Obama has repeatedly vowed to make the closure of the Guantanamo prison one of his priorities as soon as he took office.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters that the military were preparing for an order to begin a “comprehensive review of policies and procedures related to detainee activities.”

“The president has clearly made his intentions well known,” Whitman said. “And he has taken the first steps with respect to his direction to order a pause to military commission proceedings.”

As the first step towards the closure, military judges have agreed on Wednesday to suspend war crimes trials at Guantanamo for120 days for a “broader, comprehensive review related to detention activities at Guantanamo.”

About 245 detainees currently are held at Guantanamo, out of some 800 who had been sent there since it was opened after Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
