Vinh Bao, 92, was one of the founders of the Saigon National School of Music, which is now Ho Chi Minh City’s Conservatory of Music, where he taught from 1956 to 1966.

Bao is one of the few remaining professors from his generation of the original practitioners of “don ca tai tu”, a typical form of traditional music originating in southern Vietnam. Bao’s talents also extend to languages; as a polyglot, he can deliver his lectures in French, English, Cambodian, Japanese and Chinese.

During the award ceremony, which took place at the Consulate General of the Republic of France in HCM City, the ambassador awarded France’s “Academic Palm” to Dr. Diep Thi My Hanh, a teacher at the HCM City University of Natural Sciences, for her contribution to the construction of the Bamboo Eco-museum in southern Binh Duong Province.

This is the first museum of its kind in the south-east Asian region, and is the result of co-operation between the HCM City University of Natural Sciences, Binh Duong Province authorities, France’s Rhône Alpes region and the Pilat Garden.
