Creativeness from waste

With their image of an opened Pepsi can lying amongst dried leaves, Nguyen Huy Trong and Do Nguyet Ha won the Vietnam Young Lions contest to book a ticket to the Young Lions Creativeness Contest in Cannes, France this June.
Within 24 hours, contestants had to make an advertising product on a computer with simple design software. The theme of the final round of the Vietnam Young Lions contest was not new or difficult: Raising awareness of the need to reduce waste.
Because the topic was old and fairly simple, it proved difficult to win.
“In a short period of time, we had to find the best solution. I and Trong played the role of examiners to give comments on our products,” said Nguyet Ha.
They had different ideas, but finally, they agreed to use the photo of an opened Pepsi can lying on dried leaves. However, it was the message on the ad that brought victory to Nguyet Ha and Trong.
“This is a Pepsi can. It can be an ashtray, a flower vase, a musical instrument, a small lantern, a tiny fish pond, or a small toy⦠It can even become a brand-new Coca Cola”.
This advertising product convinced the jury through its message: Nothing is waste if we know how to take advantage of it for different purposes.
Other contestants conveyed the idea that everything is waste and we need to diminish waste in different ways.
“Vietnamese youngsters are not inferior to international friends in creativeness,” Trong said.
Nguyet Ha studied graphic design in the US for five years and she has worked for two years in the advertising design industry. Trong graduated from the Foreign Trade University. They both love advertising and work for the Lowe Vietnam Company.
The firm’s creative manager, Bob Cohen, said: “I have no doubt about Ha and Trong’s talent. This is a great opportunity for them. The contest in France is very competitive but I think the prize is within their reach.”
Young Lions is part of the Cannes Advertising Festival. It will attract around 60 teams from different countries, aged 28 years and younger. This will be the first time a team from Vietnam will compete.
