French, Vietnamese crime thrillers hit HCMC

The Institute of Cultural Exchange with France in Ho Chi Minh City has opened a French and Vietnamese crime film series.

IDECAF will screen Vietnamese director Bui Tuan Dung’s Vu dieu tu than (Death’s dance) at 7 p.m. tonight.

The institute will show Le petit lieutenant (The Young Lieutenant), directed by Cannes-winner Xavier Beauvois, at 3 p.m. this Saturday, while Olivier Marchal’s 36 Quai des Orfèvres (Department 36) will show at 7 p.m. next Monday and Tuesday.

Monday, the series featured Pars vite et reviens tard (Have Mercy on Us All) by Regis Wargnier. Wargnier also directed the 1992 Golden Globe and Academy Award winner Indochine (Indochina).

The series also includes Scènes de crimes (Crime Scenes) by Frédéric Schoendoerffer, to show at 3 p.m. on February 14, and Le convoyeur (Cash Truck) by Nicolas Boukhrief at 7 p.m. on February 23.

Vietnamese subtitles will accompany all French films while French subtitles will accompany Vietnamese films.

Tickets are available for VND15,000 (US$0.86) at the institute, 31 Thai Van Lung Street, District 1.
